For many Montanans, making a first-time home purchase can seem complicated and out of financial reach. But the Montana Department of Commerce and its partner organizations are offering classes to help prospective homebuyers learn about resources available when buying their first home.

“Education is power, and so this class will help us, hopefully get a home,” Zachary Kozicky said. “A home is -- it means a lot more than you can put words to.”

The classes are partly funded by the Montana Board of Housing and offered through the NeighborWorks Montana Network. They are geared toward helping first-time homebuyers learn to assess their readiness to buy a home, budgeting, home financing, home maintenance. Once these classes are completed, Montanans can access Commerce programs to assist with the purchase of their first home.

For Kozicky, the ability to purchase his first home will mean a lot for his family.

“We will learn a lot and will know how to take advantage of the programs for people that are out there like us, for first time home buyers.”

For Jessica Arlint, homeowner education is a path to stability. “It’s going to mean so much. It’s security. The kids are going to do better in school when they have a secure area,” she said.

The Montana Department of Commerce helped thousands of Montanans in 2016 by providing:

  • Low interest home loans
  • Down payment and closing cost assistance
  • Home buyer education
  • Funding for Habitat for Humanity
  • Access to mortgage credit certificates
  • In state loan servicing
