Coal Board
The Coal Board seeks to assist local communities experiencing impacts as a result of coal development or decline with the mitigation of governmental costs associated with such activities.
Board Background
The Coal Board is attached to the Montana Department of Commerce for administrative purposes only. The Board was created in 1975 with the adoption of the Coal Severance Tax through Senate Bill 87 for the purpose of aiding local governmental units, which have been required to expand the provision of public services as a consequence of large-scale development of coal mines and coal using energy complexes. The Coal Board seeks to assist the local community experiencing impact with funding to meet the escalating costs of adequate governmental services and facilities.
